Taoyuan City Government continues to build a smart intersection protection system to create a people-oriented, sustainable and intelligent traffic environment

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan presided over a municipal meeting on November 30, 2022, to hear the "Smart Intersection Protection Plan" by the Department of Transportation. The Department of Transportation continues to apply for funds from the Ministry of Transportation for the construction of intelligent traffic facilities. At present, it has developed two protection systems, "Pedestrian Crossing Warning System" and "Intersection Protection Warning System", which have significantly reminded drivers to slow down voluntarily and increased the safety of passers-by. In the future, the Department of Transportation will continue to strive for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and other traffic safety improvement programs from the Ministry of Transportation, and to build a better people-oriented, sustainable and intelligent traffic environment for Taoyuan.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that the Department of Transportation automatically detects pedestrians and vehicles with the aid of AI and radar to remind drivers of the road conditions ahead. Two protection systems, the Pedestrian Crossing Warning System and the Intersection Protection Warning System, have been developed so far. Among them, "Pedestrian Crossing Warning System" has been set up at 5 intersections in the city. When the AI image identification system detects pedestrian crossing at the intersection, it will send signals to CMS for warning and remind vehicles to slow down. The average speed decreases from 39.4 km/h to 25.6 km/h, with a speed reduction range of 35%.

Mayor Cheng explained that the "Intersection Protection Warning System" has completed 19 intersections, the number of which is the first in Taiwan. Mainly at the non-signalized intersections with poor visual distance and prone to conflicts and accidents, the roadside detection radar equipment is used to detect all traffic coming. When there is a side, the warning board will be automatically triggered to remind drivers to pay attention to the road conditions for the purpose of reducing the speed. The average speed decreased by 32% from 37.3 km/h to 25.1 km/h. Both systems can significantly remind drivers to reduce speed voluntarily and increase the safety of passers-by.
