History of Taiwan Rock Music Exhibition is open 12/8-12/27 in witness of the chapter of Taiwan Rock History.



Cheng Wen-Tsan, Mayor of Taoyuan City headed to Taoyuan Arts Center today (12/8) to attend the “Hey! Let's Rock'n Roll – History of Taiwan Rock Music Exhibition” and he expressed, the Ministry of Culture is in collaboration with the Department of Culture Affairs of the City Government to hold the History of Taiwan Rock Music Exhibition at Taoyuan Arts Center spanning from December 8 to December 27 to demonstrate various perspectives which are not only the vital trend of Taiwan music but also the symbol of the vitality of Taiwanese people. This exhibition traces the history of the development of Taiwan rock music via six themed exhibition areas and five speech-concert activities to let everyone see rock, hear rock, and as a result appreciate the value of Taiwan rock music.



Mayor Cheng pointed out that the history of music is a form of culture and it reflects the transition of the society. The vitality of Taiwan music has always been strong. It's gone through the influence of post-war White Terror, campus folk song, foreign music culture. Currently, underground bands gradually become indie bands, attracting a great number of young fans to participate and have fun. Nowadays there are numerous bands which are formed by ordinary people rising from different cities. Also, under the influence of Internet technology, forms of music performance have increased in diversity, signifying the vital trend and vitality of Taiwan music.



Mayor Cheng mentioned, music is the indispensable soul of cities. Taoyuan City has dedicated to the promotion of music culture. In recent years, quite a few domestic and foreign bands chose to hold a large concert in Taoyuan. For example: Coldplay from England, Guns N' Roses from the U.S.A., BTS from Korea, and May Day all performed live in Taoyuan. The City Government also promotes exciting music activities like Taoyuan Iron Rose International Music Festival, Vocal Festival in Taoyuan, Taoyuan Heavenly Voice Singing Competition, Taoyuan Hakka Music Festival, and Taoyuan International Indigenous Music Festival, etc., in hopes of music culture becoming the feature of a city and create more vigor in Taoyuan City.



Mayor Cheng said, to provide facilities for live performances of different scales, the City Government is building “Taoyuan Pop Music Outdoor Theater” with support from the Ministry of Culture. It is located at A17 Linghang Station of Airport MRT in Qingpu Area. It is expected to be in operation starting from the second half of 2021. The capacity of this multifunction outdoor facility is up to 15,000 people. It's capable of activities such as a concert, outdoor movie screening, and exhibition markets. The City Government hopes the Ministry of Culture can support the construction of Taoyuan Pop Music Center that follows to let musicians who are willing to break the frame have suitable facilities to pursue their dream for music and the music culture in Northern Taiwan develop even better.



Mayor Cheng also mentioned, Taoyuan City is a city of significant historic meanings. It has nurtured highly representative musicians such as Teng Yu-Hsien, Lai Pi-Hsia, and Fong Fei-Fei. Hence, the City Government has set up Teng Yu-Hsien Music Memorial Hall in Longtan and Lai Pi-Hsia Memorial Area in Taoyuan North District Hakka Hall which keeps Hakka folk songs. Fong Fei-Fei Memorial Hall is also in development in Daxi District. Hopefully through the History of Taiwan Rock Music Exhibition people can see rock, fall in love with music, and therefore feel the characteristics of Taiwan shown by musicians via music.



There are six major themed exhibition areas at History of Taiwan Rock Music Exhibition. They are “Image of Entrance”, “70 Years of Taiwan Rock Music”, “From an Ordinary Person to a Singer”, “Going Lights-Out”, “Standing on the Roof of the World”, and “Future Prospect of Taoyuan Music”. Besides a lot of personal collection which are out-of-print in the exhibition, the interaction area of modern technology and music is also available to let visitors enjoy the sense of accomplishment from creating their own music. During the exhibition, five speech-concerts on weekends are arranged by the City Government. Artists including Joseph Yeh, Liu Yu-Rui, Lin Cheng, Wu Po-Tsang, Chang Si-Shi-San, Yang Su-Hao, and Cheng Feng-Sheng are all invited to the event to share their rich insight into the development of Taiwan Music in the form of laid-back speech-concert. The event spans from December 8 to December 27 at the exhibition area on the 1st floor of Taoyuan Arts Center. It is open from 9:00 to 17:00.
