2020 Taoyuan Fine Arts Exhibition Kicks Off, Citizens Resonate with Artists on a spiritual level.

During the 2020 Taoyuan Fine Arts Exhibition Awards Ceremony-cum-Press conference on November 8th, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan stated that the Taoyuan Fine Arts Exhibition has become Taoyuan's oldest visual arts competition, and receives many positive responses every year. Outstanding works of art will be selected via open solicitation, and all selected works will be exhibited at both the Taoyuan City Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Zhongli Arts Hall. Until November 22th, ink wash paintings, glue color paintings, oil paintings, watercolor, and printmaking will be exhibited at the Department of Cultural Affairs; calligraphy and seal carving works will be exhibited at Zhongli Arts Hall.

According to Mayor Cheng, the 2020 Taoyuan Fine Arts Exhibition has been held biannually for the first time. This year, the theme is “Paintings and Writings,” and constraints on the size of the works has been relaxed, attracting 820 contestants to submit their works. Out of the remaining 146 pieces of works after the first round of selection, the judges will conduct reviews on the art works in person, and awards such as the Annual Special Award, the top three works, and the Honorable Mentions Awards will be presented at the event. This year's six prize winners of the “Taoyuan Fine Arts Award” are Lu Ju-Sheng for ink wash paintings Light Cultural Hall (〈光影文化館〉), Lin Jyu-Jhen for glue color paintings Illusion of Life II (〈幻境生機Ⅱ〉), Luo Ying-Liang for calligraphy and seal carving Vigorous Wings (〈奮翼〉), Pan Wen-Kai for oil painting Scenery Inside the Car (9) (〈車內風景(九)〉), Wen Chi-Chun for watercolor Memoirs-4 (〈回憶錄-4〉), and Lin Yi-Lung for printmaking Fungi and Almonds Forest (〈栮杏相之森(日)〉). Winners of the Annual Special Award, which was added this year, are Huang Chien-Yu's watercolor work Adventures in Wonderland (〈夢遊仙境〉) and Chen Chin-Chung's ink wash work Deer's Death in the Wilderness (〈野有死麕〉).

Mayor Cheng has also stated that Taoyuan is currently constructing the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts and the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center. Through participating or visiting various arts exhibitions, citizens gain the opportunity to become closer to artistic creations, cultivate their sense of aesthetics, and gain a deeper understanding of how artists present artistic innovations, breakthroughs, appeals, criticisms, or reflections through their works. In the future, the Taoyuan City Government will continue to support various cultural constructions, allowing Taoyuan City to become an oasis for cultural events.
