Taoyuan City Government, Central Weather Bureau, and National Central University cooperate to monitor the coastal environment in Taoyuan City

Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan attended “Taoyuan City Coastal Environment Monitoring Cooperation Agreement Signing Ceremony” in the morning of July 7 in Taoyuan City Government. He represented the city government, Central Weather Bureau, and National Central University to sign “Taoyuan City Coastal Environment Monitoring Cooperation Agreement,” and the subscribing witness is Wu Chau-Rou, the vice premier of National Academy of Marine Research. Mayor Cheng indicated that the city government will cooperate with Central Weather Bureau and National Central University to plan to build observation network of base currents along Taoyuan's coast according to the city government's demand on coastal oceanographic data. The real-time monitoring data will allow the government to start disaster prevention work according to oceanographic change in advance, and the government will have a good knowledge of ocean currents and sea drifting garbage, guaranteeing the safety of inshore fishery. There's room for Taiwan to progress on the conversation of marine resources. Mayor Cheng hoped that through this cooperation, we can protect our ocean together, achieving the goals “smart oceanographic service & environmental sustainability development.”

Mayor Cheng said that the observation network is a smart monitoring system. It not only combines National Central University's skills of earth science and space remote sensing, but it also combines meteorological and oceanographic observation, and forecast technological skills of Central Weather Bureau. The city government has gathered relevant units to choose 6 places to build the observation network. There are 2 places in Dayuan District, 3 places in Guanyin District, and 1 place in Xinwu District. The city government will help them acquire the land to set up the stations and pipelines. Central Weather Bureau is responsible for the construction of stations, the purchase of equipment, the quality management of data, and the publish of information. National Central University will provide remote sensing technology, data analysis and other relevant techniques to read collected data. The three sides will set up cooperation platform to discuss and share information, meeting the demand of environmental protection of coastal areas, ecological conservation, and disaster prevention work in Taoyuan.
