Daxi Township

Daxi Township

Daxi Township: Garden of Folklore and City of Culture

Daxi was named "Dagusian" by the Atayal. It was renamed "Dagukan" by immigrants from Zhangzhou. It was again renamed as "Dakekan" due to Li Teng-Fang’s successful outcome in the imperial examinations. In 1920, it finally received an official name “Daxi”.

Currently, the township has a population of 91,862 an area of 105.12 km2. Daxi features spectacular mountain scenery and most citizens are of Fujianese descent. It is a typical agricultural township.

During Daoguang and Guangxu regimes of the Qing Dynasty, the Dahan and Tamsui rivers were connected together and sailboats could directly travel from Tamsui to Dakekan. This enhanced trading, filling the township with merchants from around the world. Daxi was not only the innermost port in Taiwan, but also the exporting port for agricultural products, daily necessities, tea, and camphor oil from Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli. There were over 300 trading companies in Daxi with most of them located on Heping Road. Many ships travel through its port during its prime also. Today, the spectacular streetview of the past can still be seen on Daxi Old Street, making the street a good place for cultural exploration.

In addition, dried tofu from Daxi is famous because of its fine water. High-quality furniture of refined craftsmanship is another specialty of Daxi. Many leisure farms and orchid gardens have become well known in recent years following aggressive promotion of intensive farming. Some flower farms have even begun to develop lotus flowers plantings extensively in the marshland. This will surely make lotus another well-known product of Daxi.

It is a great pleasure to visit Daxi. Attractions like the Cihu Mausoleum, Asia Amusement Park, Longjuwan, Peach Blossom Garden Leisure Farm, Jaiming Temple, and Mt. Lianzo each have their own characteristics. Don’t forget to enjoy the whipping top show in Daxi because it is one of the distinctive arts in Daxi.

All these interesting culture and touring spots make Daxi a great place to visit in Taiwan.
